(Sadly) Fast food becomes the UK’s meal of choice - We need to “Dig For Victory!”

It pains me to have to post this… it really does…

“Fast food, for the first time ever, now makes up more than half of all the meals eaten outside of the home in Britain.

The recession, and the subsequent squeeze on disposable income, has encouraged millions of families to cut back on spending on luxuries, especially on meals in restaurants. This has encouraged many to trade down to cheaper meals, especially burgers and fried chicken…”

This goes against everything that I try to do with my blog here, which includes
• Promoting fresh home prepared food
• Encouraging you to planning your meals a week ahead with a menu which saves money when grocery shopping
• Cooking with ingredients which are in season / fresh ingredients
• Convincing you that home cooking with fresh ingredients is actually cheaper when you know what many fast foods contain… (or don’t contain as the case may be…)
• Knowing the provenance of your ingredients
• Trying to convince you that home-prepared food tastes better and is more healthier than ready-cooked “meals”
• Cutting back on take-aways (take-outs)
• Cooking in large batches whereby you can freeze some for a later date and so save money
• Trying to convince you that if I can cook then so can you
… and so much more…

Perhaps we need to focus more on growing more of the food we eat ourselves… allotments, renting someone’s garden, community gardening and growing…

I think in order to get ourselves out of this recession, or not let it bite as painfully as it does, we need to once again “Dig For Victory
